Charlie is still with us!
Charlie is a category 1 hurricane with wind speed of 85 mph. It's off the coast of central SC and could make landfall near the NC/SC coast. Raleigh area forcast to have winds up to 40 mph later today. Costal areas and barrier islands may see flooding and beach erosion.

Yes! We don't need another Fran or Floyd! I saw, first hand, the damage those two did throughout the central and eastern part of the state (I was part of an environmental response team that went out after the storms passed).
Our barrier islands and immediate coast from the central Outer Banks south have seen a significant population explosion like Florida and most of the folks there have never seen a major hurricane and what it can do. Unless the state adopts more serious warning and mandentory evacuation rules, we may face the same disaster as just occurred on the west coast of Florida. What just happened with Alex on the Outer Banks is a good example of the problem. Everyone vacationing out there was given the impression that they would see nothing more than a big rain storm.

I experienced effects from Fran, Floyd...and Isabel...but with all due respect Suncat as you and I both know well...Mother Nature can't be harnessed...
Actually it's looking better Charley-effects-wise for the Triangle area from what I'm hearing from met Mike Mays on WRAL.
The path now of the center of Charley looks to be heading just east of I-95 this afternoon.
Eric

Well. according to radar right now the eyewall is less than 15 minutes from my house. Conditions here: Gentle breeze, light rain, extremely humid. Have had about 2" of rain today, had about 2" on Thursday from Bonnie.
