Fla. Rest areas

#1 Postby TheShrimper » Wed Sep 01, 2004 5:34 am

Does anyone know the policies of the DOT for rest areas during hurricanes? I have a friend in WPB that is considering, no stating that he will ride out the storm in his motorhome in one of the travel plazas on the turnpike. Are the buildings safe, structure-wise, and will the businesses stay open inside the plazas? I know for Floyd, all the rest areas on 75 here were jammed with east coasters. Will they throw you out of the areas?

That is Suicide

A motor home exposed to hurricane force winds is suicidal. Andrew destroyed toll plazas. If he is talking about driving to Atlanta that is one thing, but there is no where I would stay on the Florida Turnpike. Motor Homes roll over; I saw them after Andrew. He must be kidding.

This guy sounds like a dope, if the storm heads in a direction to put him at risk. One thing is certain if he makes it through I doubt he will repeat this.

Yeah, it makes sense that the minmum wage earners at the BK in the service plaza's will risk life & limb to serve your buddy up a whopper during a Hurricane I mean after all they don't have home & family to protect - gotta move those BK broilers to the jerks riding out the hurricane in a rest area.

The Service areas will be closed, but that doesn't mean that you will be run out if you decide to park yourself in one of the lots.

This is incredibly foolish.

If he doesn't have anywhere else to go, he should go to an official shelter.
