Mom seeks advice for family going to NC

#1 Postby OregonMom » Thu Sep 02, 2004 1:37 am

I'm posting this to collect some opinions from those of you who are experienced with incoming storms such as Frances. My son, daughter-in-law, and two-year-old grandson are scheduled to leave Oregon on Friday, headed for Raleigh, NC and then on to Holden Beach, NC for what they think will be a delightful Labor Day weekend. They plan to return on Monday.

This mom thinks that they will be trapped between a storm surge and inland flooding or worse. I know that the Atlantic is much different than the Pacific. They haven't had that experience and think that I am an over-reactive, nervous-Nelly party-pooper.

Any comments from those of you who wish to give your advice will be passed on to them. Thanks in advance...

Don't worry too much Mom. Unless there's big increase in forward speed, it will be hundreds and hundreds of miles still from North Carolina even on Saturday. There will be time to watch and take action if necessary for your family to get out of the way.

Doesn't look like they will have any problem, but just need to stay aware of any changes. Their bigest concern at this point is for a high risk of rip currents from swells being generated from Frances. I live on Oak island, which is one beach east of Holden, and warnings have already been put up this morning for rips and will likely continue through the weekend. Most of the small beach communities in this area do not have lifeguards! The Weather Channel and local government channel are really good with putting out warnings about rips and they should be taken very seriously. Other than that, I hope they have a geat visit. Still tons to do even without entering the water!

The rip currents will be really bad on the Brunswick county beaches. They need to stay close to shore if they plan on entering the water.

Thanks to those who answered--I'm feeling slightly better about this trip my kids are planning. Any updated advice appreciated. Thoughts and prayers are with those in the path of this ominous-looking storm.

Feel 100% better. :)

Frances has snubbed us, she won't make the turn. This is the Florida Space Coast's storm.
