Dial Up, Cable, Or DSL?

Im wondering what everyone has for one. And also to mention that i just switched over from Cable to DSL. And i will say that my speed is alot better with the DSL. The cable was good i guess untill everyone else now has it on the block. Which i dont know if everyone knows but with cable its a shared line where DSL isnt. Has anyone else done the switch and if so what was the results?

Cable...its called a T3 connection. Don't worry i don't have this at home just in my dorm lol. DSL at home home.

I switched from dial-up to DSL about 2 weeks ago (is that it? :o doesn't seem like it :o ) and man was there EVER a difference!

I also tested out the cable Internet speeds in this neighborhood and they stink, they run about 540K and my DSL runs about 730K.

This old fogey has a dial-up, 56K......connects at 45.3....
...other options available, but, if I don't KNOW how fast
it is, I won't want one.....right?

Yea the funny thing is around here all you see is the Cable adds that claim they are the fastest! :roll:

DSL is a shared line too :-)

The difference is that DSL gets shared at the POP or "Point of Presence" where cable is shared at the neighborhood (cable) level. Most commonly used DSL services base their offering on a T-1 type signal which operates at 1.5Mbps often with different upload and download speeds. Cable access is based on the 10Mbps ethernet standard. Since many cable and DSL companies throttle or control bandwidth to the subscriber, speed differences vary widely among DSL and Cable providers. I use RoadRunner cable and would never give it up! My performance is 2-3 times what GTE DSL subscribers get in this area.

Bottom line if you're looking for a high speed connection check all the details in your area including talking to people who use both services :-)

I have cable line ... and it's wonderful (except when both Cable TV and Cable Modem went down earlier today ... but it was because of once again, some "less than qualified" road crew workers who cut the fiber optic line once again ... at that pace, they won't have a business with all the fines they continue to fork out each time this happens...

Just for comparison purposes, I regularly get between 2.4 and 3.1 Mbps on internet speed tests. I love my RoadRunner! :-)

Thats what i had was RR. My DSL is Sprint. And this box has a 10M and a 100M which it is running on the 100M so im taking it they made changes to it. This is not my area of expertise. I just know that my speed is much better then i had. Dont get me wrong my RR was very good but even before everyone else started getting it around here i still didnt get the speed i am now getting with this.

I have the cable. I was not getting full speed at one point so I called my cable company and they did a check on it and said I wasn't getting full speed. They came and fixed the problem now I am running 800k. My cousin has DSL and my connection is faster than hers.

True it costs more than dial up breeze, but it is well worth the money IMO.

King of Weather, what you're seeing is the connection between your PC and the DSL box. That portion is still ethernet based just like RoadRunner. The speed between you and your provider is based on a digital 1.5Mbps circuit. I've been in the communications and networking business since 1984. Just like I said previously, it all depends or your local provider :-)

I just happen to be in an area with a low user density and my RR kicks big butt!

Oh i have had them out here many of times. Partly because it has broke down alot. They have even replaced all the lines Connections and everything and i still havent got what i do now. It could be like i said though that every house on this block has Cable.

Defintely have to agree with Lindaloo.

Annette, getting a cable line or DSL is well worth the money, plus you free up your phone line (plus you won't have to tie up the phone - or get a second line for the dial-up modem)

Marshall I had to buy an ethernet card for my tower so I could connect the cable modem. What exactly is this roadrunner?

RoadRunner is Time-Warners brand name for their cable internet service Lindaloo. All DSL and "cable" services use ethernet to communicate between the PC and the Cable/DSL modem. Nearly all PC's sold now have an ethernet card built in now. :-)

Yea your probably right. Last year though i did read a artical about the dsl and cable and how supposedly DSL was comming out with something faster. Im just guessing that what i have may be it. I had forgotten about it untill today when i was testing this out. Im gonna go and try to find that artical later. But anyways i am running at 100M and my speed is better then i had so i am very happy with it.

I'm with you breeze. Too many kids and too many bills for me! I canceled cable TV 5 years ago, so I just have the dial up. It's slow but it's what I can afford. BTW, I only connect at 24 kbps!, 26,400 on a good day. But I manage. What stinks is that it takes forever to load satellite loops! But I'll suffer through it if I can pay for dance lessons for the girls. There's so much junk on cable, the kids our better off without it anyhow! Though I do miss ESPN sports, especially Sunday nite games
