This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

once again, newbie so be gentle. Has anybody ever seen a storm do what Frances is doing? I mean the thing has hardly moved in hours, is the thing even drifting?? I just get this ominus(sp) feeling that this strom is going to something "historical"

I see movement on the radar loop, but it's pretty darn slow. Proof of movement is that Florida is now getting some of the feeder band rain and winds.

Elena went towards the panhandle, stalled and went se toward tampa area, stalled and went back nwest past the panhandle. That was a wierd storm. I was in the panhandle and had to take shelter two separate times.

I know just about enough to sound like I know what I'm talking about sometimes. But for your safety please follow the nhc for truly professional forecasting. :D

In 1984 ( I think), Juan hovered right along the Louisiana coast for about a week before pushing to the north. If I remember right, it made landfall once in La, went back into the gulf, and made landfall again in La a couple days later. This storm put 4 1/2 feet of water in our home because of the constant southerly winds. The winds were only around 85 mph. We stayed flooded for 2 weeks. They actually cancelled Halloween.

yes. Sometimes the steering currents in storms just disappear. Look up informaiton on Hurricane Kyle. One of hte longest lived hurricanes on record. Steering currents completely dropped away and it drifted for weeks.

yes..actually 8mph is rather ordinary for a tropical system in this location.....making steady progress....steering currents may be weaker than before but they are definitely there to keep frances on course.

The weirdest track I recall was Kyle. It eventually landed in the Carolinas, but meanered around the Atlantic for something like 23 days .. gaining strength, weakinging, going north, south, west, stalling, looping, ...weird.

I remember Juan. Big rain maker, and in late October. The thing that stuck in my mind is how weird it was to have a hurricane in such cool weather.

"Kyle"

I remeber reading about a hurricane of the Carolinas/Virginia that did the same thing as Kyle.It happened in 1967.Can't remeber its name, but it was a cat 1 cane and it had the forecasters tearing their hair out.It came close to the coastline, went back out,did loop dee loops and zig-zags,then moved south...

I remember Juan from Baton Rouge. This was the first "whatever it was" hurricane that I weathered alone with a small baby.

It will be interesting to see what this little Frances is up to.

The 1967 Hurricane

#20 Postby Aslkahuna » Fri Sep 03, 2004 7:50 pm

was Doria-it tracked north along the coast then went out to sea and then came back intensifying before landfall in MD and then tracked due south over Norfolk VA and eventually dissipated not far from where it formed.
Ginger in 1971 moved north offshore and then looped completely around the Bermuda High and made landfall in NC 29 days after it formed.
