Heavy rain in China kills 14

#1 Postby senorpepr » Sat Sep 04, 2004 7:28 pm

CHENGDU, China, Sep. 4 (UPI) -- Heavy rainfall in the Sichuan Province in China has left 16 dead and 14 others missing, said the provincial disaster relief office.

Xinhua, China's main government-run news agency, reported Saturday that precipitation exceeded 4 inches in seven counties, with the county of Nanjiang suffering a 10-inch rainfall.

The continuous rainfall since Thursday has caused mud-rock flows and landslides, interfering with travel and destroying farmland and reservoirs.

The provincial meteorological department has forecast more rain for the same areas, while local governments implemented emergency plans to deal with rescue operations.
