This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Ivan just doesn't like landfalls............

#1 Postby Dean4Storms » Mon Sep 13, 2004 7:23 am

If someone would have forecasted this exact track to this point a week ago and said he would skirt around the south of Jamaica, then same thing with the Caymans and then shoot the gap between Mexico and Cuba having never made a landfall, I would have laughed.

This hurricane could only have been a Russian named Storm. So far it has wobbled as much as you'd expect any Russian to wobble after a week in the Carib. with a bottle of Absolut Vodka!!

Except the one in Grenada, unfortunately...

I also find it hard to believe it has done that around Jamaica and Grand Cayman. It seems like many storms don't like Jamaica for some reason as they are diverted to its south (most likely) or its north without making landfall. Of course, Gilbert did make landfall there...

This occurs with slow moving storms with weak steering currents. It has been referred to as a frictional effect.I would not doubt that we see a further shift W as Ivan approachs Cuba then a bounce N as it gets close to YUC.
