Please Post Ivan Damage Reports Here

#1 Postby MWatkins » Thu Sep 16, 2004 12:33 pm

I'm sure many are looking for information on the impact of Ivan. Rather than have to hunt through the board...here's a sticky for folks to use to post reports in one place at the top.

Summary of posts from the psj forums:

1. MSNBC News reporter Kerry Sanders just reported from the Dome House on Pensacola Beach (not Navarre). He was speaking with the homeowner (they rode it out together) and reported sand everyhwere, some houses destroyed, others damaged. "War Zone" was term homeowner used. It didn't sound good. I think the individual who used "gone" as term was probably an exaggeration but it sounds safe to expect some major property damage. No photos or current footage in the report.

2. Just talked to my parents who live on Sounside, they live about 1 1/2 in from 191A (DuBose rd) and are on the North side of the road so dont know how the beachside houses are doing but they do not have water in the house at this time, and think there is one tree down in the yard, but thankfully not on the house. Still have the roof. They lost power before noon yesterday.

3. I just spoke with a friend that lives on Laurel road near the elementary school, he didn't evacuate. They had over 3 feet of water in their home and the whole neighborhood was underwater. The water has gone down some, sounds like any development south of 98 was underwater last night/morning. He said the wind damage was minimal...just flooding. God Bless all of them!

4. My family in Pace (Santa Villa) are ok - no major damage for them but said it was the worst hurricane they've ever seen. They are without electricity and water.

5. Talked to my cousin this morning. He lives on White Road close to East Spencer Field Road. He reported that while the damage was significant to Trees there was no damage to any houses that he could see outside of blown Shingles and no flooding . Everything on the corner of White Road and East Spencer Field road appears to be OK. Lost Power.

6. I am a resident of GB proper but I cannot reach anyone there, however I have family in P'cola that I have been in contact with. Three of the 4 are in the Cordova Park, airport, Spainish Trail area.

My sister off Spainish Trail has two trees that fell and penetrated her house, she tells me there are no trees standing in her neighborhood. My mom in Cordova park has roof damage and there is debris everywhere.

My mother-in-law in West Pensacola had an oak tree crash through the roof of her house, it also smashed my sister-in laws car.

My other sister had contact with a GB proper resident who did not evacuate and is a block north of Tall Pine Trail. He was getting water in his home as of about midnight.

7. The water in my parents house in Gulf Breeze (near Oriole Beach Elementary) came up to their waists, furniture and everything else was floating around in the house. By now the water has subsided to ankle deep and they have been able to go outside and take a look around. Their 2 cars floated into the yard, all kinds of furniture and debris floating in the yard and the water is still up to the front deck (about 1 foot). That's the last I got from my parents at about 8:00am.

8. Ok, the best I can offer is bad news from Warrington. I am currently away for school in Tallahassee and have been in contact with my parents. We live on the water and have experienced catastrophic flooding. I would estimate waters 15 feet above normal, covering our SUV and Truck and eventually pouring through the house. (Funny image) my parents and dog are literally floating around the house on their bed. In short, other than the brick structure of the house, we have lost everything. I am afraid to report that this is most likely the worst storm Pensacola has faced in the modern era. I can only hope that those further inland are doing better.

9. I have heard fro family off of Lilliah Hwy and 70th ave and 58th ave. Lots of trees downs. No flooding yet. Parents lost large shed and tree on cars. This was the news as of 6:00 AM on Thursday 9/16/04. If I hear more news as the family gets out at sunrise I will post.

10. I just reached my family located near Lilian Hwy. and 98 and they are safe but worn. They just went outside ....lost a large tree in backyard, entire stockade fence, roof damage but okay. No major flooding at this time. Lots of trees down.

11. I just spoke with family who rode it out on Dogtrack Road. They are fine but said there are sheds down everywhere. There are tons of trees down and on a lot of cars and homes. Not much water damage as of now but are still getting tropical storm winds and will be for several hours. God Bless everyone effected. Our prayers are with you.

12. My sister-in-law owns the Perdido Bay KOA in Lillian and lives down at the water side of the bay. She is up at the store but the house has no roof or windows. If you cross over the Perdio bridge and look down to the south, you probably have seen that big white house sitting there. I am trying to find information on Chandelle subdivision. If anyone can help me, I'd apreciate it.

13. Just talked to a resident on Electra Lane - no flooding, reports of fence down, chimney down, soffit damage.

14. Just talked to Mom--She did not evacuate but did go to a friend's house that is larger and has basement. We live in North Hill--Corner of Lee and Lloyd. She said all the windows in front are gone, skylights all came in, fence ripped away, but eveyone is OK. Has not seen our house yet as curfew still in effect until 8:00. Anyone heard about Pensacola Beach--any chance that houses 2 streets back from the gulf are still standing?

Just talked with family and friends down there.

Gulf Shores is completely under water. The storm surge went up over a mile and a half over the main roadway (HWY 59). Rescue workers cannot get to the beach yet due to the water (6-8 feet in spots.)

The famous Flora-Bama lounge is severely damaged along with many condominiums in Orange Beach.

There is varying degrees of structural damage all over Baldwin County. From what I hear, there were SEVERAL tornadoes in the northeast eyewall. I based this on several buildings in Gulf Shores, Foley, Elberta, and Lillian that just seemed to explode. Trees are either mangled, twisted, uprooted, or snapped.

South Baldwin County Alabama is a mess....

Just talked to my Mom in Niceville. No electricity, lots of debris.

The I-10 bridge over Pensacola Bay is ashed out. As stated elsewhere, all four hospitals in Pensacola suffered major damage. What they are hearing there is that to say the very least Pensacola is trashed. considering they were in the eyewall for at least 2 hours that is not surprising. Also said they are still having tropical storm force winds and torrential rains.

South Mobile

Just talked to my mom in South Mobile. Damage along Dauphin Island Parkway between 1-10 and Dog River is moderate to heavy. Lots of trees and power lines down, and fallen trees block the streets in some places.

My uncle, who lives on the bayfront just south of Dog River, sustained light damage to his Bay Road home. Even his pier survived, which makes me think there was little storm surge.

Both say the overall damage is a little lighter than it was in Frederic, at least in Mobile and Hollinger's Island.

Hurricane Ivan destroyed a section of the 30-foot Bob Sikes Bridge. Blews said it was likely that the only access to the beach would be by helicopter or boat.

Pensacola Bay Bridge is closed to traffic
The Pensacola Bay Bridge is closed to traffic because of erosion beneath the north approach to the bridge. Until further notice, no motorists will be allowed to cross the bridge. Emergency personnel will have access.

That just about does it for access to Gulf Breeze and a decent detour then.

My guess is they will have to bring I-10 down to 2 lanes across the bay if the other bridge is still drivable.

Pensacola Beach is obliterated

Hurricane Ivan ripped a path of destruction from Gulf Breeze to Navarre that most emergency crews found unbelievable.

“I’ve been through a lot of hurricanes, but this is the most ungodly thing I’ve ever seen,” Gulf Breeze deputy police chief Robert Randle said.

When emergency workers emerged from Hurricane Ivan’s onslaught Thursday, they didn’t realize at first that a roughly 30-foot section of Bob Sikes Bridge, which links Gulf Breeze to Pensacola Beach, was missing.

A quarter-mile debris field littered the entrance to the Gulf Breeze side of the toll bridge, making it difficult to get near the bridge. Shock was the reaction once officials discovered what had happened.

“I have never seen anything like this,” Gulf Breeze Police Chief Peter Paulding said.
In Navarre, a deputy on scene said part of the Navarre Beach Causeway had washed out.

More bridges reportedly destroyed

Bob Sikes Bridge is wrecked. So is the Navarre Beach Causeway. Most of the two fishing piers that ran the length of the Pensacola Bay Bridge are gone.

I'm in the Bluewater Bay community east of Niceville. Haven't lost power, phone, or cable yet, though we've definitely been getting flickers. The Okaloosa County water system is still considered to be potable.

Lots of trees down and foliage debris here. Spousal unit is currently outside doing something with the chainsaw (Dad's Christmas present to us really is going to come in handy) and has apparently found someone who will take the sandy pine leaning against out roof. If we had to have a tree there, better one of those than an oak.

From http://www.wpmi.com :

If you live along highway 59 in southern Baldwin County, be prepared to see damage when you return home. This morning (Thursday) my photographer, Mike Corry and I traveled down 59 from I-10 to Gulf Shores. The damage was greater the further south we traveled.

Here's what we found. Robertsdale: Trees down all along 59, many protruding onto the highway. Most were cleared by mid-morning. But we did see several trees down on a few homes and businesses. Power and other utility lines were draped across the highway, or dangled from poles. Traffic and caution lights were down. A low brick fence surrounding the First Gulf Bank has crumbled from WIND! I also saw roofs ripped from a couple of businesses.

Don't look for power to be restored any time soon. The good news? The roads are passable.

Summerdale: Utilities and trees are down along 59. In fact, I saw stretches where several poles in a row were all bent or broken, the utility lines on the shoulder. Utility sheds sold at a business on 59 were rolled and scattered, some onto the highway. Billboards are bent double.

Foley: All of the above and more. Several businesses have no roof. A couple are demolished- one store in a strip mall on the north side of town looked as though it had exploded! Pieces of gas station awnings are scattered along highway 59.

The small trees lining Uptown Foley streets have been snapped at the roots. Even more sad is the park uptown. Most of the big trees have been uprooted. Those who have made Foley so beautiful before the storm have a lot of work ahead, but we all do, don't we?

Gulf Shores: You may have seen some of the video from Gulf Shores. I won't mince words- It's tragic. Debris litters highway 59 until your reach the Zoo and King Neptunes Restaurant. From then on, it's water everywhere until you reach the gulf. And not just water- rough surf. The beach road must be under many feet of gulf water- we couldn't get within a mile of the beach.

As of noon today (Thursday), the water is still there. If you have property on or near the beach, be prepared for the worst and hope for the best. I wish I could be more optimistic, but it doesn't look good. I didn't get close to Orange beach but it could be similar. The canal side seems to be much better off.

I wish you all well as you return home. Just know that we feel some of your pain. Our NBC 15 television broadcast tower collapsed during the storm! (Until repairs are made, watch us on our sister station, UPN 44 WJTC.)

And one more thing -- There is a BOIL WATER alert in Baldwin County!
