I just want to let you people know just how increadable the people of the
rural communities are here in Mississippi. I left Pascagoula about 9am
Wednesday morning... and the traffic was horrible. We have no Interstate
highway running north and the main HWY 49 was a parking lot. I was
packed up with my wife, 7month old baby Camille and 2 dogs. We were
headed to Jackson to stay with mt sister. We took the back roads all the
way there.
Just about every church we passed (and this area is the belt buckle of the
Bible Belt) had a big sign welcoming any and all evacuees. We were listening to the radio and the local channels and they were giving advice
on where you could stay, where to get gas, what would be the best route
around the traffic and all commercial free. Evertime we stoppped for gas
or walk the dogs someone would approach us and ask if we needed
somewhere to stay or if we needed anything. One lady in Pinola was
handing out cupcakes and paper cups of milk... These people were there
for us and rest assured... anyone out of a home from Fl or AL has a friend
here in Mississippi. Just ask us... if we don't ask you first!
I can't tell you how proud those people made me feel to be from Mississippi.
