looking for info on past tampa bay hurricane
I read somewhere that the 1935 storm was a cat 5 and hit Tampa but I can't find any info on the net. I know Donna did some damage in 1960. Which on hit Tarpon Springs? Websites anyone???

The 1935 Labor Day hurricane was extremely small (similar to Charley), but passed within 30-40 miles of the Pinellas county beaches. An anemometer in downtown Tampa measured sustained winds of 75 mph with a gust to 84 mph. It's IMO likely the beachfronts from St Pete Beach to Clearwater experienced 100+ mph sustained winds...possibly even cat-3 conditions.
The Labor Day hurricane apparently weakened...and wasn't of cat-5 intensity when it passed west of Tampa. Saying that, I doubt it weakened to a cat-2 at second landfall west of Cedar Key as NHC says. The second landfall occurred in a very rural, sparsely populated area with no weather stations within 40 miles. At Cedar Key, tides were reportedly the highest since the cat-3 hurricane of 1896...so IMO the 1935 hurricane was at least 115 mph when it made the second landfall between Perry and Cedar Key, FL.
Hurricane Donna brought hurricane force winds to Tampa....gusts of 75 mph at the Tampa WSFO, 100 mph gusts at Sarasota, and estimated gusts of 80-90 mph over Tampa Bay. Fortunately, it wasn't a direct hit...as Tampa was west of the eyewall.
The last major hurricane to make a direct hit on Tampa Bay was 83 years ago....a cat-3 which made landfall near Tarpon Springs on October 25, 1921...with sustained winds of 115 mph and an 11' foot storm surge. This hurricane was apparently weakening at landfall, because it was reportedly 140 mph and 941 mb while passing through the Yucatan Channel a couple days earlier.
