This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

geographic question

#1 Postby jpigott » Sun Sep 19, 2004 10:16 pm

i live about 4-5 miles south off the Jupiter Inlet (for all the boaters out there one of the most dangerous inlets around even in the best of conditions) My question is this, given the countor of the E. coast of FL Jupiter Inlet sits at approx. 80W. sort of sticking out. While not as pronounced as say the Outer Banks or the Florida Keys, it seems to me that from a purely geographical standpoint that my area would be at a slightly higher risk from tropical systems, is there any stats/data out there supporting this. For instance i know there has not been a major landfalling hurricane from Stuart/Ft. Pierce northward to Savannah in a very long time, yet just a few miles south at the Jupiter Inlet we have seen our share of storms throughout the years (well maybe not the last 20 or so yrs., but from the 20s-70s we had quite a few)

Hurricane City has some lists of various cities and how often and by what storms they have been hit. Go to the how does your city rank link on the right.

Then, just last night I found somemaps through the NWS showing graphicaly how often different parts of the atlantic basin get hit by storms, broken down by the month and the level of storm. That kept me occupied for an hour or two. Boy howdy South Florida is hurricane central! Even in October!
