Florida Coastal Impact

#1 Postby sponger » Wed Sep 22, 2004 9:45 pm

I was wondering what sort of impact the double whammy of Karl and Jeanne will have on Florida. Karl is sending a long period ground swell which will be enhanced as it moves North of Jeanne. It doesnt matter much for surfing as Jeanne will likely be on top of us with on shore winds. Any thoughts?

NWS Jax is calling for 9-11 foot seas just offshore Saturday with Jeanne approaching.

Most surf reports are showing 4-9 foot all week until Saturday. Might be some higher sets. id think we would see some nice 12-14 footers if Jeanne comes this way.

My biggest concern is the tidal issues below:

They are out of date, doesn't look like they factor Jeanne at all.

Even if Jeanne stays offshore, we could see way higher than normal tides.
The moon is less than halfway between apogee and perigee (farthest and closest) from earth.

(earth and moon are closet @ perigee) This results in slightly higher tides than when @ apogee. As well as 3 days out from Full Moon on Sunday, Sept 26th. This also results in slightly higher tides.

So we could be 1-2 feet above normal without factoring in the swell from Jeanne.

Frances caused the St Johns River Seawall to overflow in quite a few areas. We had a decent surge from it. Not too mention how soaked everything still is. Still 17"s over normal this year.

it would be interesting to do some more research on this.
