Quote from local here in New Orleans:
Well, this is a shot in the dark, but I'm seeing some trends in the overall pattern that suggest in the coming weeks we may need to be looking to the Gulf for development closer to home. As we get later in the season, we tend to see this type of thing, so it wouldn't surprise me at all.
What I have been noticing is that the models seem to want to lower the pressures in the western Caribbean about a week from now and hint at some convection flaring up down there. Now this could be nothing at all, or it may be a sign of things to come. Who knows? But I think over the next few weeks any tropical threats that may develop will probably come from the south. We'll see.
In the meantime, I am going to enjoy the QUIET tropics for a change!
Oh yeah - for those of you not aware, my Dad lives in Port Saint Lucie, FL. He evacuated here for Frances, but to my dismay, decided to stay for Jeanne. Luckily, he and the rest of my family made it through OK even though they were right in the eyewall. There was just minimal damage to his house. But I've heard this a thousand times and I knew I would hear it from him after Jeanne: He told me he regretted staying and would NEVER stay to ride out another one again. Dad's a pretty tough guy, but I'm convinced he was scared to death during Jeanne. I told him he would be, but I guess he didn't believe me!
Anyway, I'll pop in here from time to time this week. Otherwise, I'm going to enjoy some time off. Have a good week everyone and enjoy the great weather we have coming up!
