Impact of a Postive/Negative NAO on Select Cities

The following are seasonal snowfall statistics for Boston, New York City, and Washington, DC when the NAO averages positive or negative (1950-51 through 2003-04 when NAO statistics were regularly provided):

NAO Averages Negative for December-March Period:
Boston: 45.2"
New York City: 26.3"
Washington, DC: 19.0"

NAO Averages Positive for December-March Period:
Boston: 38.3"
New York City: 21.6"
Washington, DC: 13.5"

Snowfall Increase with Average Negative NAO over December-March period:
Boston: +18%
New York City: +22%
Washington, DC: +41%

NAO Averages Negative for December-February Period:
Boston: 49.8"
New York City: 29.1"
Washington, DC: 20.2"

NAO Averages Positive for December-February Period:
Boston: 37.1"
New York City: 21.2"
Washington, DC: 13.7"

Snowfall Increase with Average Negative NAO over December-February period:
Boston: +34%
New York City: +37%
Washington, DC: +47%
