Homes evacuated as fires rage in NSW

#1 Postby senorpepr » Wed Oct 13, 2004 8:26 am

Up to 50 people on the New South Wales, Australia, south coast have been evacuated from their properties due a bushfire in the area this afternoon.

The Rural Fire Service (RFS) says the fire to the north of Nowra has burnt close to 100 hectares of bushland.
Earlier this afternoon the RFS declared the scene a bushfire emergency.
Around 100 firefighters and three helicopters are battling the blaze.
A spokesman for the RFS, Cameron Wade, says the fire is now having an impact on property in the area.
"Some of those are rural properties there is also a large urban development in the region of the fire and we'll be keeping a close eye on that," he said.

There are at least 20 other fires burning across the state, although they're not currently threatening property.
There is a total fire ban until midnight in 13 of the state's 21 fire regions.
