Possible Hurricane force winds for the UK Wednesday

#1 Postby stu » Sun Oct 24, 2004 6:42 pm

OK wrong forum

A 958mb center low to track to within 50 miles of the SW UK coast (Cornwall) before stalling for some 12 hours before moving NW across Ireland.

Well that is what the models are more than hinting at, infact almost agreement – actually it is quite an interesting setup as a few thing are coming together.

A warm WBMT plume of TM air will undercut cold upper air which should form in a low – now as this interacts with the jet looks like it will induce some VERY rapid cyclogenesis -in fact the global models prog. this to bomb some 26mb from +48 Hours to +72 Hours.

This could turn out to be another significant late October event – perhaps not in the same vain as the 1987 “hurricane” which tracked across southern England as the track will not be the same – but the effects of the stalling will mean that severe storm force winds could occur for a long period of time.

I am trying to get Wednesday of work – there could be some great pictures to be take of HUGE waves crashing against the Cornish cliffs - not to mention the winds.

One to watch 8-)

Earlier model runs were suggesting a low around 955hPa. The low doesn't look quite so deep on the latest runs. Which model are you looking at?

Ok, maybe it could be that low.

Really low pressures. This system looks big enough for the Met Office to have issued a severe weather warning.

The BBC haven't really said much about this until now. The models have all been showing this for quite a few days.

The pressures are low, but no where near this.

Great plot Paul

06z GFS still maintains a 958mb low but has moved the centre westward meaning that the effects for the UK wil be much smaller - it will still be a rough ride in Ireland however.

Has my name been changed without anyone telling me?

The Met Office have moved the centre slightly (Not much) west as well. :(

Edit - I think I know who you think I am. He used to post on Net-Weather but I haven't seen any posts from him recently.

18z UKMO run now has this as a 953mb 51N 9W @ 18z Thurs which is about 75 miles SSW of Ireland. Its position therefore means that most of the UK will not see storm force winds aprt for the south and East side of Ireland and the SW cornish and Devon counties.

Actually the low does take and interesting track - stalling and performing an almost full loop before turning south and making "landfall" in NW spain of Sunday - there is VERY good model agreement on the track and the depth of the system and I would be shocked if it does not pan out.

Winds however now only expected to reach 55mph+ soa good job I said possible hurricane force in the subject heading ;)

Here is the fax chart for you all to see - not however that it is a live link and will update in about 6 hours.
