Fat passengers burn more airline fuel

#1 Postby j » Fri Nov 05, 2004 9:49 am

Just in case overweight people aren't being blamed for enough problems, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says airlines spent $275 million to burn 350 million more gallons of fuel in 2000 just to carry the additional weight of heavy Americans.

OK, I say we all do our part by limiting our intake of KK donuts at the PBS by only one a day....:D

In metro Atlanta, Krispy Kreme is still king....my little sis takes home a couple boxes every time she visits from Portland. Of course, she doesn't have a weight problem (doesn't weigh 120 lbs dripping wet)....so there's no problem with the aircraft due to her weight ;)

I on the other hand, am a very big guy....but overweight airliners aren't my fault.... The last time I was flew on one was July 1999, and I have no plans to fly again. Thanks to 9/11, if I decide to see sis in Portland, I'll drive...see what Nebraska, Wyoming, and Idaho look like from a ground level perspective. :)

BTW....what next? Is the DOT going to start blaming us overweight folks for wear and tear on interstate highways? :P

I fly 8 or 9 times a year, and while I see plenty of overweight people on the plane, I believe the real reason for that extra $275 million are the overpacked, overstuffed, and oversized carryon baggage that people bring with them on the plane.

I swear that if the plane every turned over on its top it could not get upright again based on the weight in those overhead bins!

Maybe they could find a way to take a portion of that $275 million and invest it into new technology for rapid handling of passenger baggage.

they gotta blame their wasteful overspending on someone.poor fat people are the only ones anyone can make fun of and not be charged with a hate crime or a civil rights violation.yep,i'm a big guy and i'm not getting on a plane because if i can't stop it and get off when i want to,then i'm not getting in it.Oh, i wish there was a shipley's here.i liked those donuts.

Southwest is charging some overweight passengers for two tickets if they can't fit in their seats. Airlines can't afford this right now...

Better off driving.

By the time we get through security, we'll be halfway to our destination on the road

By driving, you are increasing your risk of ending up in a coffin.

Southwest doesn't serve meals anyway. :)

If they're so concerned about weight, it'd be nice if they'd stick to restrictions concerning carry-on luggage. Some people are dangerous with all that stuff they put in those overhead bins!

If you think that's bad, try Ryan Air of Ireland where they intend to order cheaper aircraft where the seats don't tilt back and there are no pull-down window shades in order to save money...

Ryan Air has some of the lowest fares...

Hey, you can't beat $10 each way from Frankfurt to London. I was looking into flying Ryanair from Hahn to Stanstead a few years ago and the fare was only $22 r/t in the middle of July, but the taxes were outrageous. In the end I flew on a comfortable British Airways 763, which I gladly paid more.

the cdc is a joke.just a bunch of political pawns and puppets of the insurance companies.the tobacco well ran dry and now they have to find another cause to bring attention to themselves and most of all, make lots of money.
