What piece of music are you ashamed to admit you own?

#1 Postby The Big Dog » Sat Jan 15, 2005 12:03 am

Ok, I had fun with this topic on another message board once, so I'll try it here...

The question is: What one piece of music are you most ashamed to admit that you own?

I'm not talking about something that you just don't like. What I want is the CD that you hide when your friends come over. Or that guilty pleasure that you'd never admit out loud. Could be a CD, old vinyl album, a single on 45, whatever. We all have one. Even you. So let's hear it!

I'll even start it off: Air Supply's Greatest Hits.

Okay, I'll confess.....

The Monkees!

Yes I was a diehard fan of what, age 11? Even though my brothers tried telling me they were faking it, I didn't want to listen. I loved - corrrect that - luved Davy Jones!!!

Big Dog - LOL at Air Supply. But I should warn you, there will be someone here who likes them. Just wait.....I think I was safe going with the Monkees though!

And hey the Monkees just appeared on this week's American Dreams episode.....of course my daughter was rolling her eyes, "I can't believe you liked this band Mom!!!".....

I have a bunch of off-the-wall stuff and I'm not ashamed of any of it. If someone doesn't appreciate it, it's their problem.

Well maybe the sponge bob square pants theme song mp-3, but even that has some cool appeal.

Wait a minute! How about an old album: the best of the Bee Gees.

Okay, first off, I'll admit that I also own Air Supply's Greatest Hits and the Milli Vanilli's "Girl You Know It's True."

As for the ONE I'd try to cover up if anyone went perusing through my CD's -- the soundtrack to the television series Xena, which I own for one song and one song only...The Gabby Dance.

Then again, I have a huge box of cassette tapes stashed away upstairs. There's no telling what I have in there that someone might rib me about.

LOL We have all 3 Hanson 'early' CD's too. I chaperoned for pre-teen daughter and friend, for their concert in the Cincy area. Total and complete scream fest! BUT.....there was a solo acoustic set. The oldest son, Ike?.........came out and played acoustically, all alone to thousands of screaming teen girls. First guitar then piano. Slooooow songs. The screaming continued. I tried telling my daughter how impressive this was for a 'boy band'.....she didn't get it!!! And couldn't talk the next day either! I began reading about how talented these 3 Hanson kids were (there are a ton more at home, they're what 3 out of 9 kids or something like that?). Both parents are musicians, amateur that is. But raised their family surrounded with music.

Fast forward to a few years later and Nina shoved these CD's under her bed. I found them when we were spring cleaning once. I confiscated them......b/c I suspect we haven't heard the last of these IMHO talented 3 musicians.

And if I'm right, then she can be proud to say oneday, I still have their original stuff!!! Which of course I'll hand back to her.

Well, that's my Hanson story.....

Like Ed, I am not embarassed by any of them, just amazed we have them. Like Sonny and Cher!! Yes, Bee Gees. They were all part of the evolution of my growing appreciation of music.

Miss Mary, I have never listened to Hansen, but I appreciate what you saw/did. I have seen some of the people I saw(long story, different era of my lilfe)long before most others knew who they were grow into some of the biggest stars around. Billy Joel, Elton John, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, etc. among others.

My son gave me the newest Bee Gees album last month. It's great!!

I do have some funk music from college.... anyone remember "Flashlight".

My son rolls his eyes at me whenever I even look like I'm gonna put that in the CD magazine in the car....

oh and I have a "grown-up" Donny Osmond tape....

David - it is pretty cool to say you were into a band or musician before they were famous or on the verge of getting signed!!!

Nina's into original, alt rock now. Thank goodness!! Used to be into the Backstreet Boys, et all. She attended the Warped Tour last year as it came thru Cincinnati. A few of the bands that performed are huge now. She loves saying hey I was there!!! Same with John Mayer, he performed an annual outdoor fest called Jammin' on Main a few years back. Literally months before he was signed and well, as they say, the rest is history! We were there to see him play to a small crowd. Something that would not happen now!

HEY!!!! Now there's not one darned thing wrong with XANADU!! :D

Falco -- got that one on cassette. Rock Me Amadeus! (I'm of Austrian descent...what was gonna stop me from buying it?)

Apparently, Donny Osmond has a new album out now (just saw him on the Tony Danza show...funny, if you saw it. Best spit take ever!) I loved "Soldier Of Love." :)

Unlike what most people think of her that I know.. I think her voice is very soothing.. so I like her music
