Your cash ain't nothin but trash - or why I hate Walmart
(With apologies to Commander Cody And The Lost Planet Airmen)
Coming out of Walmart, I felt a strong urge
Gotta get me something to drink
I looked around
There's 7 machines
25 cent, 40 cents, or maybe a buck
I walked on over to the quarter machine.
Sam's club soda will do me just fine
I fed it my coin and it spit it right back
put in another and it did it again.
Well 40 cents aint too much for a drink
Generic will do when your throat is this caked
put in a nickel a quarter and a dime
clink clink clink
they all came back out.
disgusted and thirsty
I really need a drink
I'm a sucker so here is my buck
Worked like a charm
Got my Coke and went on my way.

With all respects to John (Josephine96, S2K member) and anyone else who is employed by Wal-Mart here, I have to agree with you.
Last semester in my human geography course, we were studying a little economics of the world. Some of the biggest organizations of the world: the United Nations, NATO, and Wal-Mart. I mean really, Wal-Mart is a huge, megaopolis in the retail business. A look at their income would probably make me sick! I know on the outside they try to look all rosey, but I have seen websites that are totally ANTI-WAL-MART, both from a custumer and employee standpoint. Cheating workers on their breaks, hours, wages, discrimination and sometimes treating their customers as "money dispensers".
I avoid going to Wal-Mart at all costs. We have about five Supercenters in my Metro area, and try any Friday or Saturday, and good luck finding a parking spot, finding what you are looking for as you wade through the crowded sometimes narrow aisles, and getting through checkout quickly. No dice!

I prefer Target. My local Wal-Mart is poorly managed - middle aisle if full of a dozen or more shelves/displays for weekly sale items. With room for only 1 cart to go thru on each side. Compare this to Target - Target never clutters the main aisle/runway with shelves. It's the width of maybe 5 carts. Completely free of anything but customers and carts. My Target is very clean and well organized. Compare this also to my local Wal-Mart - it's a cluttered, poorly organized mess.
But I keep hearing rumors a super center Wal-Mart is going in, up the street from this messy Wal-Mart. If so, I'll check it out. But will probably go back to Target. Target is my equivalent to Kroger's. Both stores you could blindfold me in and I'd find my way around them. Wal-Mart? I'd be missing for days there!!!!

I agree Mary, Target is the best! I have always easily found what I wanted for the same price as Wally-World and I never felt like I needed to take a shower after leaving Target. Our Wally-World is disorganized - items stuffed everywhere where the price identifiers may or may not even be in the same aisle, much less under the items. I have purchsed kids clothes from Wally-World in the past that were not only of poor construction, but holes actually formed in the material at the very first washing.( A sign of extremely poor quality or very very old material.) The food section was acceptable, but the Wally-World store brands ( I think called "Great Value") are awful.

I havent gone to Walmart or Target in a long time. There isnt a Target close and Walmart just drives me crazy. The two here in town are firetraps; narrow aisles and the quality of the products isnt what I will spend my hard-earned cash on....
There isnt anything there that I cant buy anywhere else without the hassle of the crowds {{shudder}} and lack of choices.

Harsh??
Yes, harsh. Walmart has a business ethics that is well-known throughout the business community. You see what they do is they force vendors to release all merchandise information regarding how much raw materials costs that make the goods, so that Walmart can figure out what it costs to make that good, and then they tell the vendor how much they are willing to pay for that item. The vendor has to agree on that request or their item does not get sold at Walmart, and since items sell well they have no choice, but to release this information. On the other hand, WALMART usually sells its inventory within 3-5 days, 7 being the max before they rotate out and buy more merchandise. Walmart pays for these items NET 30 days, so when they sell wihtin days they use the money that should go to the vendor and continue buying the merchandise basically on the vendors money, thus it doesn't cost Walmart anything to buy the merchandise because they are paying it back within the 30 days, but they get huge returns on their money. example: they purchase $100,000 in let's say in trash cans. They (Walmart) sell the $100,000 within let's say 2 weeks. The money owed is not due until day 30, so they use the money that should go to the vendors and buy other merchandise, thus using the vendors own money to buy items. When the 30 days are due, Walmart pays the vendor what is due, but they get in return huge profits from merchandise bought and sold on the vendors own money. That is what I mean by harsh.

Correct, that branded items will be the same from store to store. Crest toothpaste is Crest toothpaste no matter where you buy it. But the prices are fairly well set accross the board. Wally-World may cut a few cents, but other stores run specials too. Yes, Wally-World will "match" any advertized price... I know this for a fact because I ended up behind a nut case that had purchased TWO ( NO LIE) TWO carts fill with every imaginable item and was making the cashier review each and every one against a stack of flyers. (Such "value concious items like the pre-sliced cheese and Yougurt to Go).
I took a list of the top 25 items I purchase on a monthy basis and checked three grocery stores ( Publix, Albertsons and ugh ..Food Lion) and three warehouse stores ( Target, Wal-Mart and K-Mart). Publix and Target were the lowest "regular" prices. Now, if there is a sale, I might switch briefly, but those are the items I know I will purchase.
Now, when discuss store brands and brands that are only carried in specific stores...there IS a huge difference in quality.

I have not yet reached the point in my life where I'm going to argue about 5 cents difference on a tube of toothpaste.
I do my grocery shopping at Publix. Period. I dont buy clothes at Walmart. I buy pet supplies at Petsmart. I buy home items and Bed Bath and Beyond.
I buy cosmetics on line at Sephora (or at the store when i go to Vegas).
Home Depot and our local nursery for plants, and whatever other hardware and home stuff.
No need to do Walmart, or KMart or Target... ever.
