"Going to da PO-LICE academy!"
WooooHoooo
Found out late this afternoon/evening, Michelle and I are going to a *mini academy* for the White Mountain Apache Police
HOW COOL is that??? I've wanted to go to the academy for a LOOONG time, it takes a sponsor PD to submit the recommendation for the academy AND to top that off, they are going to pay for us to attend a *concealed weapons* course next month
That way, we can pack *heat*
on searches, which is a GREAT idea actually. In recent months during our weekly trainings, we've came across some pretty mean critters out yonder, mountain lions (nice kitty :o ), bars (bears), rattle snakes and wild dog packs OH, not to mention Wylie Coyote *Beep Beep*!

A word of advice to the both of you; do not only listen to your rangemaster, but take a good look at what weapon HE's carrying, and how he has it configured (target hammer, accurized, ported, grips, etc.) and carries it (holster type, how worn, how used BY this person on-range).
Then, go and do thou likewise...TRUST me on this.

As my old STL MPD rangemaster said, "If you can't do the job with a .38 Special, you're trying to do something you shouldn't."
If you are opting for a "smokewagon" (revolver) for Michelle, may I suggest a K-38 M-14 S & W Heavy Masterpiece, 6" barrel, target hammer/trigger set for "whisper" on single-action (or one of the newer S & W .357 6" models, with vented rib and magna-ported, also fitted as above), carried in a Bianchi strong-hand side, high-ride thumb-break holster.
The only "real" difference between a .38 Special and a .357 Magnum is the .357's 0.9" longer shell case; the bullet and powder charges are identical (but better if you choose to handload).
If you employ the newest police-approved sub-sonic ammo, she will probably "beat" you in qualification firing...unless you get two of the same type.

sunny shine,
Your LadySmith is a "J" frame, with at best a 3 1/2" barrel...its tiny frame size and short barrel length WILL "kick like a mule", even if the shooter was built like Hulk Hogan. It is best used as a "belly gun", i.e. for close-in defense (remember that most shooting incidents occur within 7 yards or less).
A better choice for you would be a 9mm Lorcin with a ported barrel; still "small" enough to be concealed easily (I assume you have this for self-defense), and the ports on the upper fore-end of the barrel will push the gases UP and out to the sides at 30-degree angles, making a second shot (if necessary) easier to make without the recoil you are experiencing with your LadySmith.
m_f, I had a Ruger Security-Six for a "back-up" in an ankle holster, and it was a generally good firearm..what I didn't like about it was that the hammer-trigger were not adjustable, which made mine a "hard-squeeze" at the range. Considering that it WAS to be used as a secondary weapon, that consideration was a "moot point" for close-in fire.

We're going to Sringerville tomorrow for business, on the way back there is a OLD general store there, called *Western Drug* one of the last remaining old fashion store that has everything in the WORLD in it, including the largest weapons section in most of Az. Spingerville and surrounding areas are home to the largest militias in the lower 48, don't know if y'all remember, we had a deputy kill a member of that militia a few months back, it made national news for 2 days. ANYWAY, with that kind of militia being there, needless to say, the cache of weapons and ammo they carry would blow your mind!!!! Their prices are very good!
