I think this office consistently ahs the most dramtic winter discussions:

THIS LOOKS DANGEROUS AND I THINK THAT ANYONE WHO CANNOT HANDLE 25 SEAS AND 60 KNOTS OF WIND SHOULD GET OFF THE OPEN OCEAN BY 6 PM SATURDAY AT THE LATEST AND RIDE THIS OUT ON LAND FOR A FULL 24 HRS.

A storm like this has that potential and folks should be inland. Any fishermen out there have no business to be out at seas during a storm like this.

WHY THE FISHERMEN STAY OUT....

#3 Postby Persepone » Fri Jan 21, 2005 3:05 pm

The reason the fishermen off the coast of Massachusetts stay out in storms like this is that because of the way the law is written, once they go out, they have to stay out or forfeit their right to fish under the quotas.

I personally would like to see the laws rewritten so that the fishermen can come in to port and to safety and go back out when the danger has passed, but that is not how the laws are written.

Apparently once you go out, you have to stay out until you get your quota, because once you come back to land for any reason (even safety), you can't go back out to catch the balance of your quota.

And since the quotas are so restrictive, the fishermen are going broke as it is, so they risk their lives and stay out because they have wives and kids and mortgages, etc. etc. It's very tragic!

We have forecasts for 50 mph winds this weekend, as well as the snow storm. Being out there in a fishing boat will be hellacious...
