When will winter return to the WEST?!

#1 Postby AnthonyC » Fri Jan 21, 2005 7:04 pm

Winter has fully engulfed the entire East coast...to say the least. After experiencing brutal cold temperatures all week and now an approaching blizzard this weekend, when will the West get back to action? California is experiencing record-high temperatures...some places almost hitting 90 F in JANUARY!!! Washington state has experienced tremendous rain and river flooding, but afternoon high temperatures are near 65 F in JANUARY!!! After this powerful coastal low departs on Monday, a more zonal flow should take shape across the entire country, hopefully bringing an end to the MILD temperatures in the west...possibly reopening Snoqualmie and Steven Passes? I guess we can hope. ALL EAST COAST PEOPLE...ENJOY THE SNOW AND BRUTAL COLD WHILE YOU CAN. AND BE SAFE THIS WEEKEND.

Glad to see the east coasters getting some winter action finally, hopefully they will share the fun with us west coasters in a couple of weeks!

If the ECMWF 8-10 mean pattern develops with the split along the coast and an out of phase active southern branch trough over the SW US we'll be in a classic Niño pattern with CA and SW US wet and dry in the Pac NW. The UKMET goes along with idea but some of the other models do not.
