There's probably some sleet mixed in with the snow...when radar indicates impressive colors like that during a snowstorm, that usually means sleet is mixing in. Don't think that's all snow.

Doesn't snow appear heavier than it really is on the radar though?

That is the area of a sleet/rain mix in. But it is still impressive for late January.
