Tree damage near/around Disney

#1 Postby hurricanetrack » Wed Feb 16, 2005 10:28 pm

Hey there:

I am currently on "vacation" at WDW and I have to tell you that the tree damage around here is significant. I played dumb and asked the Disney bus driver today why there are so many downed and broken trees. He told me that it was from the three hurricanes. He said the big worry now is that all that wood is drying out and will be a potential disaster in the making once the lightning season returns.

I am going to take some photos and video tomorrow of some of the tree damage. You should see the patterns- it is just amazing. Reminds me a lot of Hugo's damage pattern in the Francis Marion Forest.

Anyhow- there's my report from Lake Buena Vista.

And here the Media (again) didn't said all about Disneyworld in terms of damage when the hurricanes moved thru there. All is about $$$$$ to not say the whole story? It had to be other persons like Mark to tell the real truth.

I will never forget the view as I came north over the Charlotte Harbor bridge on I-75 shortly after the storm. No leaves and massive trees broken in half.. Looks like a big lawnmower with a dull blade a mile wide made made a few swaths through the county. The next nasty fire season will be just that with all of the fuel created from 2004. Weve gotten lucky this fire/dry season so far down here..

it was weird - here in the middle of the state it looked like someone had just plowed through there- alot different than here. i didn't understand it after all we had been through.

That means we hardly got anything compared from what Orlando got. Charley brought them 105 mph gusts. We got a slow moving tropical storm and a fast Cat 1.

Trees down

#9 Postby hurricanetrack » Thu Feb 17, 2005 10:00 pm

The area near Epcot has large swaths of trees (mostly pines) blown down all in one direction. Even the area outside my resort (Old Key West) has massive pines just blown over. Some are snapped too- but it seems a lot were just blown over.

Also- all over the place you can see brown, dead trees mixed in the forest as well.

Just think- when WDW was built, there were no hurricanes to affect the area since. Then, all at once, three impacted the area significantly. Now imagine if one more big one plows through this season. I really think that the '05 season is a critical one as far as our economy as a whole. Should the Gulf oil interests be hit- then gas prices will sky-rocket. If central FL is pummeled again, it could severely affect tourism around here- and MIGHT prompt people to start moving away. Some 50,000 people work for Disney- what if 10% decide to leave and move elsewhere? And another 10% are too affected by a hurricane to make it to work? There could certainly be trouble if another bad hurricane cuts across the state this season. Of course, we all know that- I just thought I would remind everyone.

It would be really bad if a hurricane made landfall in Central Palm Beach County or lower. Most of the people here think we've seen it all, we haven't seen jack. Most of the damage was superficial compared with what would happen should a major come plowing through here.

Parts of Central FL got clobbered with those hurricanes. I live about 35 minutes SW of Disney. We lost 3 huge trees. My neighbors lost 19!

Some people still don't have their roofs repaired since there is a shortage of shingles. Others don't have their pool screens due to screen shortages.

I'm still amazed when I drive into an area I haven't seen since the hurricanes hit. Things look very different.

I continue to be amazed at just how many blue tarps remain on roofs in FLA so long after the hurricanes. I shudder at the thought of what these homes and the landscape would look like if stronger and larger hurricanes hit usl

It's hard to believe Charley roared through the state 6 months, 6 days ago.
