2012 Olympics

#1 Postby James » Sat Feb 19, 2005 4:02 am

I'm not sure if there has already been a topic on this. If so, I apologise.

With the IOC due to make a decision later this year on who will be hosting the 2012 Olympic Games, who do you guys think will get it? Do you think it will go to London, Paris, Madrid, New York or Moscow?

Hope we get it but I can see it going to Paris.

You are lucky you can't pick up BBC London, I'm fed up with people on their complaining that they don't want the Olympics.....

How many times have the USA had summer and winter Olympics over the last few years though? We haven't had the Olympics since 1948.

I can certainly see the Olympics going to a European venue. The only candidate outside of Europe is New York, and as P.K. said, America has hosted a lot of events in recent years.

I would say Dallas, but the mayor there would be so uptight about noise after 9:00PM.

So uptight, she'll call 911 on a person sleeping in the woods.

Actually, we do get your News on BBC America (those of us with Satellite or Cable, that is).

Maybe we should make a poll for this question?

If things go downhill in China, we could just boycott the 2008 Olympics like we did when the Olympics were held in the USSR.

You won't get the local news though. It isn't as bad on the national news.

Is there much opposition to it?

A few stupid locals who don't seem to want it.*

*Note: I can't see any reason why we wouldn't want it here though.

They need to have Twenty20 cricket at Lords rather than archery though......

When I went to barcelona last weekend, you could see the city was riding on the wave from the games they held in 1992. The games are a great thing to have.

1992-2008 Summer Olympics
92 Barcelona (Europe)
96 Atlanta (North America)
00 Sydney (Australia/Oceania)
04 Athens (Europe)
08 Beijing (Asia)

In order from Most to Least Likely:

1. New York (America)
Reason: It has been 4 games since an American city has hosted it.

2. London (Europe-West)
Reason: It is further from the last regional host city (Athens), and sports a different culture, however, it is still within the European region.

3. Paris (Europe-West)
Reason: It is in the Western European area.

4. Madrid (Europe-West)
Reason: Mediterranean city, very similar to Athens 2004.

5. Moscow (Europe-East)
Reason: It is in the same region as Athens 2004 and held then Olympics in 1980.

Also to note:

Winter Olympic sites

94 Lillehammer (Europe)
98 Nagano (Asia)
02 Salt Lake City (America)
06 Turin (Europe)
10 Vancouver (America)
-Odds are the next Winter Olympics host city will be in Asia. Normally, they select Winter and Summer sites separately, so I do not think that 02/10 would be a limiting factor for NYC in 12-

When can the USA host again? I thought it was later then 2012. I might be wrong though.
