Very unusual virga this afternoon SC piedmont

#1 Postby Pileus » Fri Mar 11, 2005 5:16 pm

I have seen virga falling from cirroform clouds, castellatus, etc. but never
from high base cells. There was absolutely none of the classic cauliflower
appearance of storm cells but only a very shallow and high base cumulus
deck. Extending from the base almost to the ground was virga falling in
every conceivable direction. There were numerous cells around. The
wind speeds gusted to 25 to 30 as each cascade moved over me with a
sudden drop of temperature each time. FROPA in area at time. No lightning at all. Someone please explain all the virga and why none of the
convection. Thanks. Eric in Rock Hill, SC

No low level moisture. We are seeing the same thing today as we got some mid level moisture in form Mexico and sufficient heating to build high based Cu and virga showers. This, BTW, is a common event around here during the Spring and can result in dry thunderstorms with quite strong winds and CG lightning.
