This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Why no tornado watch for Arlene??!!

#1 Postby Anonymous » Sat Jun 11, 2005 5:47 pm

Arlene just made landfall and landfalling tropical systems always preduce numerous tornadoes but they let the last tornado watch expire after issuing this MD... Maybe the SPC just forgot to issue the new watch

The tornado threat has obviously diminished greatly. If they think there's a threat, they'll issue another one.

Yes, it appears that the tornado threat has significantly lowered. They didn't forget...

just because its a landfalling system doesnt mean that a tornado watch is mandatory...we had one here yesterday though.

From NWS Birmingham at 3:58pm CDT:

CURRENT RADAR DATA SHOWS STRENGTHENING CONVECTION
UPSTREAM WHICH WILL QUICKLY MOVE ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA. TORNADO
THREAT WILL BE AT THE THE MAXIMUM FOR THE EVENT WITH THESE
STORMS. HOWEVER...NO SIGNIFICANT THREAT IS EXPECTED AND NOT
EXPECTING A WATCH TO BE ISSUED.

Well, why did the SPC intend on and say they would issue a replacement watch and then not do so---either arlene weakenned quicker than expected or they think the local NWSs and Public common sense in a tropical system is good enough that they dont need to issue a watch... And ALL and EVERY tropical cyclone that comes ashore produces tornadoes --usually numerous-- as is always stated in any NHC advisory

At landfall, there was relatively little convection due to all the dry air entrained into the system. As it moves further inland, some baroclinic forces may enhance more thunderstorm activity, and perhaps some tornadoes.

Something obviously changed... the squalls weren't THAT impressive in the favored right-front quadrant.

The answer is simple. There's no Tornado watch because Arlene was a very weak system before landfall and it is currently being invaded by dry air on all sides...you guys in Alabama get more action from summertime popcorn storms than Arlene. Arlene actually impacted the FL Keys more than where it actually hit. Conditions were more favorable farther south in the Tropics.

According to local reports, doppler radar was indicating some tornado activity on Eglin AFB land near SR 87.
