CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Floods and mudslides caused by heavy rains killed 12 Venezuelans and left more than 150 homeless in recent weeks, the director of Venezuela's emergency aid agency said Thursday.
Antonio Rivero of the Venezuelan Civilian Protection Agency said 12 people have died, 173 were left without homes and one was reported missing since heavy rains began to fall May 27.
Rivero said at least one is missing.
Floods and mudslides are common in this poor South American country of 25 million during the rainy season, which runs from mid-May through December.
Rivero said flooding has been reported by local authorities in nine of Venezuela's 24 states while mudslides have occurred in parts of Caracas, many in slums precariously perched on hillsides surrounding the capital.
More rains was expected Friday, according to local weather forecasts.
