PRELIMINARY INFORMATION FROM AN AIR FORCE RESERVE UNIT
RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT INDICATES THAT THE AREA OF LOW PRESSURE
ABOUT 50 MILES NORTH-NORTHEAST OF VERACRUZ MEXICO HAS DEVELOPED
INTO A TROPICAL CYCLONE VERY NEAR TROPICAL STORM STRENGTH.
ADVISORIES WILL LIKELY BE INITIATED UPON RECEIPT OF MORE COMPLETE
INFORMATION FROM THE AIRCRAFT. DUE TO THE PROXIMITY OF THE SYSTEM
TO THE COASTLINE...LITTLE ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT IS LIKELY BEFORE
IT MOVES INLAND BETWEEN VERACRUZ AND TAMPICO OVERNIGHT. LOCALLY
HEAVY RAINFALL AND STRONG GUSTY WINDS WILL BE AFFECTING PORTIONS OF
THE COAST OF MEXICO FROM TAMPICO TO VERACRUZ...AND TROPICAL STORM
WARNINGS WILL LIKELY BE REQUIRED IN THIS AREA.

Credit is due to Bastardi and the pattern recognition that said watch the western gulf post trof split. I know some people were bagging on him for the Arlene call, but yet, what can you do?

Bastardi takes a lot of unnecessary flack IMO. He's not perfect, but who is?

Agreed. I'm not wild about his off-the-cuff stuff, but I respect him as the foremost public head when it comes to pattern recognition.

Now Bastardi is calling for development in the Atlantic next week. Could he go 3 for 3? Stay tuned....

Well, he did call for development last week and that did not happen.
Overall, he's doing pretty well though.

3 for 3? I doubt it. Has anyone bothered to count the numer of times he's called for development this year and ended up wrong?

Shoot, if some people had their way with all the liberal naming of storms (and I'm not trying to be political), this would be Dennis or Emily.

I will never give Bastardi credit for anything until he learns to act like a professional. There is an obvious agenda behind the NWS/NHC bashing and until he can filter out that sort of nonsense, then I personally do not take the time to listen to him.

It is one thing to disagree. It is another to do what he does on a daily basis.

Sorry to get so off topic. NHC did the right thing. It was a quick development, they were able to get recon in there, and they will issue advisories on it. What more can one ask for?

YES!!! ALthough I think the NHC was a bit conservative in this case.

EDIT: Of course, it's much easier to say that in hindsight.

He's akin to a sensational journalist. I detest the company he works for.

I don't read the columns anymore because I do not support accuweather and will not pay for anything they have to offer. I do catch the videos from time to time. All I recall was that he was worried about the eastern Gulf in June post-trof split; anticipated something of a threat to the western Gulf following pattern repitition (including adjustments) and that the wave off of Africa has a shot to cross the pond where we could be looking at a coastal US threat (of a hurricane) toward the end of next week.

Maybe he's put out more than that, I don't know. I don't really care all that much in the end.
