Question about Hurricane Names...

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Question about Hurricane Names...

#1 Postby gilbert88 » Wed Jul 13, 2005 4:04 pm

I've always wanted to know why some of the names of the East Pacific list were "mysteriously" retired some years ago...

Adolph and Israel are easy to figure out... but why did Fico, Fefa, Knut, Ivo and others got retired? None of them were destructive storms (in fact Knut was a fish the two or three times it showed up).

Thanks in advance. ;)

The 8 EPAC names retired are:

1. Fico 1978 (Category 4 hurricane that passed close to Hawaii but didn't hit)

Replacement name: Fabio (probably an attempt to give hurricanes some sex appeal)

2. Knut 1987 (pronounced "kuh-noot") (tropical storm that remained a fish)

Replacement name: Kenneth (Knut was probably retired because the name, which is Scandinavian, probably seemed too exotic).

3. Iva 1988 (Category 2 fish)

Replacement name: Ileanna

4. Fefa 1991 (Category 3 fish)

Replacement name: Felicia (Fefa probably sounded to exotic or something, I don't know.)

5. Ismael 1995 (Category 1 that hit Mexico, catching many fishing boats off guard, killing 107.)

Replacement name: Ivo

(Initially, Ismael was replaced by Israel. Although a common hispanic name, it drew outrage from the Jewish community.)

Since Israel was never used, I don't count it as retired.

6. Pauline 1997 (Category 4 hurricane that slammed into Mexico, killing at least 230 and possibly as many as 400.)

Pauline was the deadliest hurricane to hit Mexico since Hurricane Liza in 1976.

Replacement name: Patricia

7. Adolph 2001 (Category 4 hurricane that stayed off the coast of Mexico)

Another name that outraged the Jewish community, even though the spelling is different and the name had been in use since 1983.

Adolph was not supposed to be used during the 2001 season. However, once the decision to retire was finalized in late May, a tropical storm had already formed and Adolph was used.

Replacement name: Alvin

8. Kenna 2002 (Category 5 hurricane that hit Mexico as a Category 4, killing 4 people.)

Replacement name: Karina
