It probably belongs in another forum, but if you're in any of these cities, the Space Shuttle and Space Station will appear in the sky between 5:40 and 6:15am either Saturday morning (LA/MS/AL) or Sunday morning (FL/TX/OK). I've only seen the Shuttle streaking across the sky once on its way to a landing in Florida. It was an orange streak that crossed the sky in about a minute followed by 2 sonic booms later on. Here's a link to the article...

Enjoy.

Great to hear - perhaps some of the other hams here will try to contact them on 2 meters (I don't have the wattage for them to hear me, unfortunately, but others do, and will listen for them as they go by).

It's one of the greatest things about being a licensed ham nowdays - we are allowed to talk to them on the Shuttle or ISS if they are working that radio as they pass overhead - the window to talk only lasts as long as they are somewhere in the visible sky, or about 2 or 3 minutes.

Thanks,

Frank

Do you think I need a compass to do the looking or just look into the general area of the sky?

You should be able to just look up and see the bright objects moving across.

For Dallas and Miami, it will be Aug 7th:

August 7th should be a good morning, too, with flybys over south Florida, parts of Texas and Oklahoma. By then, says Molczan, "the two ships will be more than 250 km apart; the ISS would trail Discovery by 30 seconds or so -- still worth observing, but not as spectacular as on August 6th." Miami and Dallas are favored with particularly good apparitions: the two spaceships will be bright and, once again, close to Mars when they pass overhead.

It is a neat site - worth getting up for. Stay alert because it goes quick.

oops I thought this was about seeing the shuttle go in for a landing. That's neat. I don't think I have ever seen this but it sounds neat too.

I may have missed it but are all the times posted EDT??? or is the New Orleans time listed as CDT? I'd really hate to get up that early on a Saturday morning and then miss it! I do love sleeping in on Saturdays :D

Times for the LA/MS/AL viewing are Central Daylight Times. I'm going to try to set my alarm to wake up and watch.

Btw, I edited the original post so no one is misled by my lack of looking at the dates for the FL/TX/OK flybys.

I saw that one too. Was waiting on the last one well, we all know what happened. Hopefully, the shuttle will make it's re-entry with no trouble.

Hey that is why I am up at 3:48am right now. I am afraid if I go to sleep that I will miss it.

2 hours to go. I am going to try and take pictures of what there is to see. I set alarms but if I am in deep sleep I wont wake up. Might as well stay up.

Are you sure that the FL flyby is at 6:41AM? - I thought it was at 5:41AM for FL folks and then about an hour later for TX/LA as they make another orbit around the earth? Having said that, I was just outside and didn't see anything...so, maybe you're right.
