Man, never realized the damage you could get from those SUV tires blowing out.

If anybody's come across a photo of a school bus on the roof of a house around 152nd St. just west of the Turnpike, wish they would post it. One of the most unbelievable scenes out of many after Andrew.

Can't believe the power of Andrew's winds. Just phenomenol. There is a HUGE difference between 140 and 180 mph winds.

Shrimper, are you in florida? If so where about? I lived in port charlotte, there was alot more than structural damage to homes and two major hotels blown away, my friends home had all its 4 walls intact and the inside blew out the back, the live right on charlotte harbor. The area was plowed down. I have lkke 8 rolls of film of the devastation the day after the storm. This was the first hurricane to almsot hit me in tampa..but turned due east last minute.

I imagine once the roof blew off, the wind had an outlet ...the vehicles were like lottery balls in the machine. Very Scary.

I have never seen a picture of the U haul truck dangling off the roof of the u haul building either....sure wish I had got a picture of that.... but it was removed fairly quickly....it was at the rental store in perrine on us1.....that was a sight to see also.

I know Perrine was just pulverized. Had a friend in Whispering Pines (or Sea Pines?) estates, she was near one of the buildings where a woman was killed by an 18-foot concrete tiebeam that landed on her.

thanks recurve.....I was only 20 at the time ....we live in cutler ridge but stayed in my brothers house in the south miami heights area for the storm...both houses demolished... just thankful we were ok...hurricanes are scary but aftermath is much worse especially with an 8 month old infant...I have some pics maybe one day when I become computer literate I'll post them

Extreme is the word. I saw that photo last week. Humor is the only positive view you can take with that type of destruction from a hurricane.
You see that after tornadoes not hurricanes. Can anyone of use truely imagine what it would have been like to be in that house through the experience of Andrew??!!...............WOW! You would be a new person and changed forever!

You know during Andrew i was in a hotel during the storm my co worker's house was right in the eye of Andrew he told me some stories and showed me some pictures that you would not believe. I think the one question he asked me was he said have you ever heard a house breathe and i told him no He said the winds were hitting his house with such force that the house was breathing and the walls were starting to give and also was telling me that the house 2 doors down was pushed 1 foot off of its foundation and even brought some reminders of what happen when Andrew passed he had a street light and a fire hydrant and a parking meter in his front yard which he still has.

Never want to experience something like that full force.

The only thing I salvaged from Charley (other than parts of my damaged house) was a 5 light traffic signal that crashed to the ground at the corner of Pine Island Rd. and Chiquita Blvd. in Cape Coral. Upon inspection, I noticed why those bulbs rarely burn out. The glass of the globes is about 1/16 inch thick, infact every one of the five still worked when I pigtailed the wiring into the 110V house circuit. I since then replaced the bulbs with 12V globes with controlling toggle switches and displayed the souvinier on top of my camper in the Daytona Intl. Speedway infield during the Feb.Speedweek for the "500". If we wanted to party, the light was left on "green', if we were crashing, the toggle switched it to "red". Under the light was a sign stating " Sorry Charley, We're Still Here" It will be continuously displayed, twice a year, untill NASCAR ( the France family) makes it unaffordable for the working man to be an attendee for the spectacle. That will be sooner than later. TheShrimper.

If someone knows where to secure those bulbs, let everyone know. It would be a long time before you would ever have to replce one.

I forgot about that photo. I think I have it on video somewhere, but would like to see that photo again. I was at 152 (coral reef dr) just west of the turnpike and have lost of pictures form there.

Most of us had "real" home owners insurance back then. Now, if a storm decides to take a joy ride with your cars and illegally park them in your house, you'll be lucky to be able to afford to pay a parking ticket.
