Dont Know Camille broke the instrument just at 190mph

As rtd said, I'm pretty certain that the largest speed at landfall was from Camille, but it's quite possible that the Keys Storm of 35 was stronger.

We just have no proof that it was.

Actually the highest ever recorded with a standard anemometer was 231mph...

but not with a Hurricane.

It was on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire.

The highest RECORDED official windspeed with any US hurricane is 186mph at the Blue Hill Observatory MA during the Long Island Express hurricane of 1938. The reported winds with Camille and the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 are estimates based upon observed effects. Tip was over water at its peak intensity so the winds with that storm are recon estimates (remember that recone didn't have the gear they now have for determining winds).

blue hills is a 600 foot hill alone near the sea.

Maybe it's not fair but that STILL is the highest RECORDED windspeed in a US hurricane.
