Dr. Gray considers retirement

#1 Postby Southernmost Weather » Fri Jun 13, 2003 9:51 pm

Colorado State University hurricane researcher Dr. William Gray is having money troubles. He says he's considering selling his forecast information to insurance companies or might just retire. Here's the link to the story:

The war between noaa and CSU is raging on and may force Dr Gray to retire and that would be bad if it happens.I was very surprised when Dr Gray in his may 30th outlook singled out various differences between noaa and Colorado State University as he never put in past reports anything of that.

Gray is better than NOAA any day. He provides a much more detailed synopsis of the factors, actually gives numbers (not ranges), analog years, and makes his first forecast very early. To me, all of his papers are rather intriguing to read. NOAA's forecasts are so vague I usually don't even pay attention to them when they're released. I'd really hate to see him retire or quit releasing his forecasts to the public. It's just like John Hope, the weather world wouldn't be the same without him.

NOAA should not provide any funding to his team for the purposes of making a seasonal forecast as they already have one. That is the same as if NOAA provided us to run NWHHC, when they have NHC. With the economy the way it is, money cannot be spent twice on the same thing
