All I can tell you is that I am watching the newscast and as they were wrapping it up they said that they just received that word.

GULFPORT, Mississippi (CNN) -- Hurricane Katrina's strike on Mississippi killed at least three people and caused what Gov. Haley Barbour called "catastrophic damage" in the state's coastal counties Monday.

The death toll was expected to rise in other states as well. (Full story) :grrr:

During Haley Barbour's press conference today he was asked what worried him most. He paused for a second and then actually got choked up before he was able to answer the loss of life. I have never seen him that emotional before. I think he probably had heard the news we are just now getting.

I still have family that is missing in the Pascagoula area (have to assume they left where they were to seek better shelter). Some family in Escatawpa okay, but have to hear from some more. Trying to learn about a friend in Gautier.

I can't believe that there was so much damage and so many deaths there!

I'm linking a New York Times (registration required) article confirming the deaths: 50 of the 55 were in Harrison County alone.

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/30/natio ... r=homepage

ETA: Harrison, not Hancock. I'm tired.

Remember 5 deaths already counted, plus three during the evacuation. That's 58...

That's exactly what I thought. Also the Gov of LA has been hinting around this all day. I definitely think they knew something but withheld. Probably wanting confirmation before releasing to the public. I think Barbour also knows just how bad it is in the coastal areas they have yet to reach. Hopefully the people there left.
