Why did they not kill the power ?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Why did they not kill the power ?

#1 Postby lurkerinthemidst » Mon Aug 29, 2005 11:54 pm

Last year when Charley was going to "hit Tampa" they turned off the power to the down town area. People complained afterwards but who cares was my thought then and now because IF it had happened it was better than the alternative. So I guess I am confused... Did no one think about live wires under water? After all they were thinking that it would be "much worse" than they claim that it is. (This is horrific I can' imagine worse and Miss is.... no words to explain) Were they thinking that the storm would shut it off for them? I don't know.... Anyone have any ideas?

There is no power over most if not all of the MS coast and much of NO and Southern LA. I'm not sure why this question is even being asked and I am not trying to be rude. Literally over 1M without power from MS to FL.

They have been saying on tv that there are live cables underwater - CNN mentioned seeing dogs been electrocuted in the cables ie still live.

Also mentioned that the problem with launching boats to recure people is that same of the cables are stil live in the water so it is hazardous! Certain people can't be rescued this way

There has also been gas explosions and the water appears to be on fire as gas is leaking through it.

Um....so why didn't they cut supplies in advance?

That's generally how it works here, they leave the power up until it goes out. The only time I heard about them shutting off the power was when the Floyd flood was threatening to send the main power feed for our town underwater. They have since built a second power feed (higher up) so that won't happen in the future.

Sometimes on the NC Outer Banks they will cut power before a storm. This is to prevent fires. Due to the isolated nature of this area its a good idea.

Cutting power before the storm would also save time when implementing a rescue as you don't have to worry about the live wires....

simply put ... Power saves more lives in this situation, than it endangers.

easiest explanation.. most people have cordless phones...how can they call for assistance?

bigger question??? why didn't people heed the warnings? I don't want they didn't have the means? N.O. tried to bus, shuttle, and drag people out of there. to safety

Has nothing to do with people being without power. Cutting power eliminates live wires being downed (the cause of people being without power to begin with).
