After all the people recovery efforts are completed, the politicos need to step back and make a very difficult decision--allow mother nature to take back her land.
New Orleans is 250 year accident. Because of its location, sinkage, and the mighty Mississippi--NO will face repeated destruction--only to be faced with certain collapses of its levees and flooding. Why should the rest of the country be forced to pay to rebuild a city that we know will be destroyed within 30-40 years, if not sooner.
NO is just like Venice--both are sinking into the ocean/swamp--
In a different era, a city like NO would have been abandoned. As harsh as this is, NO SHOULD NOT BE REBUILT.

i going to refrain from tearing you a new one on here so I dont get banned...
BUT....why should I pay for someone to live on an island off of Florida or Alabama, A tornado area in Kansas, near a fault in California waht about a terrorist target liek NYC.. What gives you or anyone the right to decide what areas shoud be rebuilt...maybe Louisiana should give the nation the finger and really show you guys what we are worth.

I agree that NOLA should not be rebuilt as it was, but we are intelligent human beings, and we can put a city anywhere we damn well please.
Design a better NOLA with the same character. The Big Easy isn't just a city, it is an international cultural icon.
There's absolutely no way I would support abandoning that city. And I don't think it will happen, ever.

I don't support anyone living on the side of a mountain that has landslides, an island on miami beach (parts of my family), a flood zone, A RIVER DELTA, etc.
I don't believe they should have EVER built there, and the continual building was a severe ongoing mistake. It is BELOW sea level and sinking? Built on suilt build up in a river delta that is meant to flood.
I just can't understnad anyone that thinks that is a reasonably place to build.... let alone REBUILD after something like this.

Put the tens of billions of aid into starting over somewhere else.

Instead of doing that, which has me fuming that you'd even suggest it, why not invest in a levee system that is adequate? Seriously, we as Americans are capable of building a reliable system to protect the city for future generations.

This levee system was not able to take a high cat1 storm.... do you know what it would take to completely make it cat5 proof. I can't believe you are suggesting that.
River deltas are made to be changed yearly based on water output and storms, they are not solid structures, not places to build.
I feel terrible for these people, don't get me wrong... but i don't want to see this happen again in a few years, and loose all this life ALL OVER AGAIN.

This could have been prevented with an adaquate levee system. There is one proposed levee system for the city to "hurricane proof" it, a 30ft levee completely surrounding the city. It would cost billions to build which is why it was not built. However, New Orleans is too prime of real estate to abandon but that doesn't mean building the city vulnerable again.
