Like imdb.com (the movie database), wikipedia is a site where anyone can contribute an article and post it, but UNLIKE imdb.com it is a bit more controlled. I think untruths, rumors, and uh-ohs! slip in every once in a while, but they're not there for long. :)

I see they have some state by state stats closer to the bottom, but it only adds up to 500+. Where is the 1000+ coming from? Is it a summation of the current estimations from the various officials? (because I personally haven't done that). Of course I'm not surprised though

In a statement by Biloxi rescue officials at 1 PM CDT September 2, it was confirmed that at least 1,000 people were killed in Biloxi.

According to the wiki article I just can't find it in any other news pieces, may be true though.

I think your Biloxi figure is off -- nobody has said that yet that I know of. It's not unrealistic, but I haven't heard it yet (and I've had my ear to the rail for a couple days now).

After watching the news coverage the past 5 days, I fear that the final death toll may be 10,000 or more, possibly tens of thousands. This will turn out to be the worst natural disaster in U.S. history in terms of lives lost. A few days ago, some were arguing that there couldn't be as many as 100 dead.

The 1,000 is what they believe the final toll will be in Biloxi... so far it's only somewhere around 200 confirmed because the coroner's office is being overrun.

i don't have the link, but 1000 Biloxi death toll was actually reported by the BBC, not exactly tabloid journalism

Given their recent reputation for reporting false news, that assumption is entirely debatable. The BBC is not exactly held in highest regard by a great number of people in the UK.

There used to be a time when you could add up the known death toll of EVERY SINGLE HURRICANE to hit the US (minus the 1900) and the number didn't come close to surpassing the total of the 1900. Unfortunately, I don't think that's possible anymore. We may be at a point where we can add up every single hurricane, including the 1900 but minus Katrina, and those numbers won't surpass the Katrina death toll.

I honestly never thought I'd see a death toll from a single storm surpass the Galveston storm -- early warnings, evacuations, all that...I thought it'd never be possible. How naive of me. :(

I have no doubt that the death toll is way over 1,000. Quite frankly, I wouldn't be surprised is it reaches 10x that figure before it's over.

Sadly, I will be surprised if the figure ISN'T close to 10,000.
