OAK CLIFF, Texas -- Dallas police have charged a man with murder following a shooting in Oak Cliff that left a 13-year-old boy dead.
Police say a father took his son and a group of friends to the movies and as they were walking up to his house in the 3200 block of Utah Avenue around 12:30 a.m. Monday, a family friend inside the house fired a gun, hitting the boy in the head.
Richard Rivers, of Champaign, Ill., was rushed to the emergency room and died at Parkland Hospital. Police say he was in town visiting his dad on Father's Day.
Police have charged Michael Parker, 34, with murder.
Parker, who had been staying at the house for a few weeks, told police he was startled and thought he was shooting at an intruder. Police said there were too many discrepancies between the suspect's story and evidence.
No one else was injured in the shooting.
