Ophelia Data from Topsail Island, NC

#1 Postby ANVANA » Tue Sep 13, 2005 11:07 am

Greetings All!

I appears that Ophelia will pass very closely to my home in Surf City. In case anyone would be interested, I've assembled a weather station here and am feeding the data from it to a website. The data updates every 5 minutes and will remain online until the power fails or my Internet connection is lost.

You can view the current weather data at http://www.topsailweather.com.

Be careful, I hope Ophelia want be one of those *ha ha* storms, and catches folks off guard. Remember Dennis? thought he was gone and before I could finish running my dish water he was back..
Don't let "O" catch you off guard, sometimes TS can be as bad as hurricanes, esp if they *sit* on you.

Yea. I'll be staying put. I hope that's not a dumb move. There is a voluntary evacuation in place, but it appears no one is leaving. I think the voluntary evacuation is a CYA for emergency management.

In any event, I have neighbors and friends close by. I am actually more concerned about the amount of rain that may fall since Ophelia seems to spend a lot of time in one place.

I'll try to keep y'all posted as long as the power holds out.

ANVANA,

When you get a chance, I would love to know what kind of equipment you are using to put this site together. I have wanted for a long time to set up a monitoring station at my river house so I could check conditions from home.

Thanks,
James

Sure thing. No problem. the weather station is a Davis Vantage Pro2 Plus. I also bought the matching USB adapter and WeatherLink software. The best prices I found are from a company in North Canton, Ohio called Provantage.

Since I own and operate my own Internet business, I just set up the site from my office. The software I use for that is Macromedia HomeSite.

The whole thing is also integrated into the World-wide APRS system.

Seen that. I think that area is the very south end of Topsail. With the tip of the beach in that area pointing right into the storm, I can understand why. Surf City still remains at voluntary.

Had a pretty good burst of rain here for a few minutes and some thunder-boomers. But it's pretty calm right now. I'm gonna stay put here for now.

Gonna try and get some photos........

Very nice! I hope someday to have a similar setup. You should top it off with a webcam.

My thoughts exactly! I planned to install a webcam across the street. Just ran out of time. (and money).

It's about 1:00am and the wind is picking up a bit here in Surf City. The last bullitin says the center is still about 110 miles South of us. The wind is picking up with guest up to 26Mph. Wind is holding steady at about 13Mph. The barometer is taking a nose-dive, though, so that means it's getting closer.

Gonna go to bed and get some rest.
