Stores in Houston getting cleared out

#1 Postby jasons2k » Tue Sep 20, 2005 9:39 pm

Just went to HEB in The Woodlands. That's a good 30 miles north of town.

No water, no ice, few canned goods, no bread, almost all Campbell's Soup is gone, I got the LAST propane tank for my grill. Someone joked in the soup ailse "this looks like New Orleans".

I cannot even imagine areas down I-45 (Clear Lake, etc.) and Galveston.

In a way it's good though, at least we are getting ready.

Kroger at West Little York and F.M. 529 (northwest Harris county) was out of water completely. Store was packed - I noticed almost all the boxes of goldfish were gone.

Same thing here.....bare shelves, no generators, long gas lines. Grocery store lines backed up a mile! It's insane.

Now in my thought, this may be a diaster in the making. Mandatory Evacs with the storm pointed about 100 miles away. What if it hits more south. And next year we get a storm pointed at us. Mandatory Evac Ah, last year we ecav and nothing happned we will be fine! Could we be setting up a disaster?

The Walmart at 529 and HW 6 is OUT of gas... They are also out of water, flashlights, propane lanterns (and propane),and batteries... The lines to get gas are crazy! I am happy I got gas this afternoon! But I was unable to get batteries or flashlights or propane for my lanterns  I am going to go look for more supplies tomorrow, wish me luck!!

We were at Sam's in Round Rock (north of Austin) and they had water - but maybe a quarter of what they normally stock. We were getting some water (like we always do) and I was surprised at the steady flow of people buying 6 or more 48 packs of 20 oz bottles. Or more.

If you can't find water at the usual places try the mini marts at gas stations or try Walgreens and CVS. The Sears Grand stores mght have water too - they have a weird assortment of stuff.

HEy my uncle and family live in Katy..If Houston eva will they need to also? I thought Katy was farther west? My grandpa lives in Angleton and it scares me he is 86 and lives alone. My uncle in Corpus is going up tomorrow to board up the windows but will wait to come up here to NTX later in the week. With all the post about food and gas lines I am worried that they might wait too long and not get out. Can you please keep me posted on this. Please send me email or leave me a message. We don't know about the gas and food things way up here. I am getting nervous about this.
Thanks

I was supposed to fly to Houston to look at properties in Spring, (fox run) this weekend, but looks like that's not going to happen. Anyway, I figured that Spring was well enough inland that people would not panic, if you will, like they do over here near the coast. That was really a surprise to read that the stores are cleared out over there.

Also, I was told that the old houses are better than the new ones since most older homes are made of brick instead of wood like the new construciton.

I'm about 2 miles from Fox Run. Look at Legends Ranch and Imperial Oaks too. Anyway, almost all houses around here are brick with wood frames, some have hardiplank or stucco. They are not built to withstand 100mph winds, which we may experience if it's a cat. 4. We also have many, many tall pine trees and mature oaks, etc.

My major concerns here are losing power for several days and a tree (or trees) falling on my house. I don't think we'd have a lot of wind-driven structural damage unless we had the worst possible case (cat 5 moving up I-45 @ 20 mph). Hopefully that won't be the case.

For all you folks on the Texas coast that could see surge such as Mississippi........ THINK U-HAUL, not just a trunk full. Pool expense with neighbors if you have to.

Also, during the hurricanes last year, I lived off of those cheese crackers with peanut butter in the middle.... pretty filling.

RE: Flashlights/Batteries/Radios - there are those that don't require batteries.... crank radios and flashlights etc. Example like the link below.

http://www.endtimesreport.com/LED_flashlight.html

Also, if you have the money, a flashlight for your head is very helpful when you need both hands but needs batteries.

RE: Water - - bottled is good but if find can't enough and you have time, get some purifying tablets to purify what water you can find ie: pool water etc. (or clorox)

If you don't have vitamins get some from a health food store, a good multivitamin and some extra Vitamin B complex 100mg per hour(good for nerves) Don't get the huge dose, your body will just get rid of it.

Sorry for ranting...... I feel so dang bad for you all. My family and I have gathered in prayer (and will continue to do so) that this will, by His mercy, weaken significantly such as Lily did.

Oh..... and if you all are in a flood prone area but not in an evac zone? Get your car to high ground! I don't want to see one single car floating anywhere in Texas. I can't believe all of the flooded out cars on the LA, MS coast.
