Size does matter.
Rita will not be dissimilar from Katrina as far as wind radii are concerned. The 18z GFDL has sustained hurricane force for the entire upper 2/3 of the TX coast, and sustained tropical storm from New Orleans to Brownsville; as of 21/0300 the TS wind radius is already 140 nm. As all good TV weathermen stress, the landfall is not a point and we cannot forget that Rita is no sibling of 'Tracy.' Please if you are evacuating, pretty much no matter where you evacuate to, you should be prepared to ride out winds of rather significant magnitude.

Hmm... that's a 265-mile radius (NOLA and Brownsville are about 530 miles apart). Katrina topped out at a 230-mile radius of TS winds.
