Lightning around Rita's eye!

The lightning now appearing around Rita's eye is extraordinary! This indicates exactly how violent this storm is now. Katrina did not even
produce a lightning ring in her eye. You can see the image at

Most hurricanes do not produce much lightning, even in the eye, because of their warm core nature. Any lightning produced usually occurs in the
outer bands or once the storm moves on shore. This type of eyewall lightning is exceptionally rare. It is usually produced by sudden intensification and very high friction within the eye wall.

that's a graphic that shows lightning strikes in the CONUS.... do you have a link for the picture you're describing?

That is absolutely amazing. I have never seen anything like this...a freagin' electrical storm in the eyewall of a hurricane!!!!

I must not be seeing the same thing. The image I get shows no lightning in the GOM at all.

The only closeup lightning picture I know of is through Weathertap, but you must pay for the service. If you have weather tap, go to:

You don't see that lightning around the eye? It's like a tiny donut.

Hmmm.....I click on the link and get the lightning image every time. I have no idea why you cannot see the lightning strikes.

Wow! Interesting. I knew that lightening didn't occur much in a hurricane. That is rare. And interesting to hear the reasoning why she has it. And I would say she meets those qualifications of a sudden intensification. Thanks.
