Looks like Rita is bombing out a day or so earlier than Katrina, relative to landfall- hopefully that will give her more time to weaken.
It needs to weaken SOON because Katrina shows the storm surge doesn't weaken just because the winds do.
Didn't Katrina bomb out 24 hours prior to landfall?
