Take a moment to remember John Hope

#1 Postby Downdraft » Thu Oct 06, 2005 1:27 pm

With all the bashing of different met's including Bastardi I can't help but think of that kindly old man that gave the weather channel most of it's class. Never afraid to go out on a limb, totally respected by his peers as being above the bar, a man who dedicated his whole life to the study of tropical cyclones. John if your looking down from that great spiral cloud in the sky I wonder what you think of this season so far? This was the year you wanted to see and this was the year we needed you to see it. How we've searched in vein to find your replacement on the national media. Sadly, no one has come forth to take your place. Mr. "and now the good news" Lyons hasn't done it. Joe Bastardi can't do it, and there isn't a met on any national media outlet that even comes close.
We miss you John we wish you had trained your protege' before you sprialed off into the great North Atlantic of the sky to calmer waters and the quiet beautiful sunset that marked your life and it's passing. This truely is a JOHN HOPE year! :(

Absolutely. I would have loved John Hope's analysis the last 2 years... two of the worst hurricane seasons on record.

I always thought of him as the Walter Cronkite of weather.

John was the best! When Andrew was bearing down on us in S Fl everyone remembers Bryan Norcross but John was a great source of info and analysis. Best the weather Channel ever had.

what else needs to be said about John Hope--he was the best and he had such a calming effect--he told it like it was without trying to "hype" everything--he HAS been missed.

I would have loved to see the man around in his prime to offer his insight into this season's storms.

Ahh well, at least heaven gets a good forecast now.

Absolutely Downdraft and others, great posts. I would love to have heard his take on this season (and last, btw).

Those that knew John knew that he had an extreme passion for the weather. I met him the first day I walked into The Weather Channel station twenty years ago. He was a father figure to many of the meteorologists still there today, and his legacy travels far beyond his death. I can't believe it's been three years. Thank you for that tribute.

According to Wikipedia he died on June 13, 2002

I liked him very much. He was like a lovely grandfather with the added feature of being an excellent hurricane expert and forecaster.
