Dear Florida,

Although I'm still keeping a watchful third eye on Wilma, I would like to wish you good luck and Godspeed this weekend.

I am in tampa, and I am getting really nervous that we may see some cane winds.

Trust me, I am not at all trying to trivialize this, but realize that it will NOT be a cat 5 upon landfall. The news media LOVES that this is a cat. 5 now and will pump it for all it is worth. However, from the NHC

But Wilma was not expected to keep its record strength for long, as disruptive atmospheric winds in the Gulf of Mexico should weaken it before landfall, Hurricane Center meteorologist Hugh Cobb. Gulf water is about 1 to 2 degrees cooler than that in the Caribbean, which should inhibit its strength more, he added.

I too am in Tampa. And I am also prepared as everyone should be. But I will not fall prey to media hype.
Good Luck

In defense of wxcrazytwo (did I say that?), he didn't say anything about experiencing Cat 5 winds. Still, it WILL most likely be a hurricane. He has every right to be concerned about what effects he'll experience.

Some say Katrina was a borderline 3 at landfall in Mississippi.

We had a 30+ foot storm surge, and confirmed 144MPH winds.

Much like terrorism, you only have to be wrong once for tragic losses
of life.

HurryKane and I are so much alike, it's not funny.

What's she's telling you folks in Florida, I can not iterate strong enough
to you. There is a strong likelihood for a catastrophic hurricane strike
in South Florida. You only have to be wrong once to join the 1,000
perished souls fom Katrina. In fact, they found another body yesterday
in Bay St. Louis, 7+ weeks post Katrina.

Don't be a victim - get out, get out, get out. This is one of the few natural
disasters in which you have a sufficient opportunity to protect yourself,
your family, and your property.

Be safe, be smart, and Godspeed.

as it stands now... Hurricane winds only extend out 15 miles fron the center... If she stays small like this... and weekens... she will only
have a Hard impact on a very small area (and that's no concelation
for that very small area).

CNIfla, you may see more of Wilma than you think. You may see cat 1 winds in Cocoa Beach, maybe stronger if the trend goes north. :(

Wait...which part of Florida is below sea level and protected by a levy?

That is what I am talking about when I say the media loves this stuff. I am not saying don't be prepared. I am not saying don't be safe. I am saying that the media will work people up in to a frenzy. Be safe, but be smart as well.
You want to know what a frenzy can cause? Ask the people who survived the bus explosion evacuating Houston.
I am not attacking any poster...I was pointing out that someone's fear was most likely media generated...

Wait...which part of Mississippi coast is? None. We still had over 200 souls lost.

My intent was only to wish Floridians luck, because I wouldn't wish even a small percentage of what we had on anyone. Floridians are certainly familiar with this scenario and capable of taking care of themselves. But a little luck never hurts.

Het, last week I saw Greese, and I thought of ya. Go grease lightning, go grease lightning..

Well, I will agree with you on that. Florida was hit with numerous canes last year and the death toll was very low (relatively...any death is of course bad...)
Say what you will about Florida government but I happen to think we have the best EOC's around.

Aw, thanks. My parents kick butt, not because they raised me, but because they do in their own right. They're pretty cool. :D
