This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

2 mile wide eye wall question?

#1 Postby smashmode » Wed Oct 19, 2005 8:34 am

What are the implications of a 2 mile wide eye wall?

I have never seen it like that.

it's like an ice skater that pulls her arms in while she's spinning...
much easier to reach higher wind speeds.

Wilma's hurricane force winds ONLY extend out 15 miles...
Tiny yet powerfull storm.

ting eye means tiny field of intense winds.
larger eye means larger area of intense winds.

i know it's tough to tell w/o recon out there right now, but has this inner eyewall collapsed yet. I don't think i've ever seen an eyewall this small in diameter be sustained over such a long period of time. Heck, there have been tornados larger in diameter.

Less people will feel the effect of the most intense winds around the eyewall. But the people who do get it, it will be very intense. It is tightley wound, it will be able to maintain its strenth better with a small eye. IMO.

Can't remember seeing an eye sustained at this small size for this long. You get eyes that fuctuate in the 6 to 10 NM range in intense storms all the time, but 2 to 4 NM is pretty wild.

i've absolutely never seen internal storm dynamics like this. What will happen to this storm when that eyewall collpases, given how tight the pressure gradient is. For goodness sake hurricane winds only spread out approx 20 miles. This storm is going to mess itself if that eyewall collapeses. How far will the wind field expand, how wide will the new eyewall be, will it contract to similar proportions. Wilma still has plenty of warm water left to go over, who knows, once she goes thru erwc she might try to break her own intensity record??? (I think i'm beginning to hear the Looney Tunes music, i need a room with white padded walls at this point)
