This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

No win situation for Key's officials...

#1 Postby TheShrimper » Wed Oct 19, 2005 6:40 pm

Man, both last year and now, those responsible for issueing the critical calls have to be pulling out what little hair they have left. After 4 evacs during crucial times in 04, and what has transpired this year so far, they have to be on pins and needles regarding FantasyFest this weekend and next week. Tens of thousands of people slated to be down there in KW starting Saturday, all that revenue depended on, and faced with the uncertainty of Wilma's eventual impact, if any. Damn, they can have that job,...it could never pay enough. Damned if you do, damned if you dont.

I thought about them today when the NHC said they were slowing down the path and effects might not be felt until much later. I'm sure they are going to get grief for starting evacs so soon. Poor people. I would hate to have their jobs this time of year!

If we have to go this is a good time of year. Dead down here now. Fantasy Fest starts next week and hopeful we'll be good by then. Last year we lost Labor Day and that was rough.

Fantesy Fest really does not get going till the end of the week that it starts in, in my opinion (although I rarely attend it, too many people!). I think that most people attending come down for the last weekend portion of the festival which includes the parade. I could be wrong since I only go about every 5 years and then only for the last night. I live about 25 miles from Key West.

My family members and friends who do attend (younger than I mostly), generally only come down for the last weekend, because it is the most exciting as far as I know.

FF is fun if you are in the mood. If Wilma doesn't hit us too hard, they will do everything that they can to have all the ceremonies the final weekend because it just means too much money to them. Personally, I wish them the best and hope that Wilma isn't too harsh on us.

I hope for your economy that things can continue as close to normal as possible. I realize it is an extreme hardship when these storms cause an event to be canceled or downscaled.

Good Luck to You! I pray that you are completely spared any of the affects of Wilma!!
