Repeat of Late November 2004 in SoCal/Western NV & AZ?

#1 Postby aveosmth » Tue Nov 22, 2005 4:29 pm

The GFS has been fairly consistent in developing a very cold trough of low pressure coming down from the Great Basin.

This is almost identical to the very strong storm that struck the deserts outside of Los Angeles w/9-12 inches of snow. This storm dropped the snow level to near 800 ft with even the San Gabriel Valley (only 30 min east of Los Angeles) getting a few flakes.

The key to this system will be placement. Of course, this is where the GFS & other ensemble members struggle & differ. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I don't think so. The November 2004 system had H5 heights in the 520's and even a bit lower while right now the GFS has lowest heights in the 538-540 range. Also think the H5 temperatures in the November 2004 system were close to -40C.

Steve,

I'll have to research on H5 heights, but if I remember correctly H5 temps were -32 Celsius. I could be wrong there as well, but I'll do the research & let everyone know.
