Rain vs Snow dependent on exact track of system ???

#1 Postby Pileus » Sat Dec 17, 2005 6:54 pm

A difference of just 100 miles north or south in the track of the Low would be the difference whether we get liquid or frozen precip in our area.
Living in piedmont South Carolina I have heard these two possible scenarios countless times during the winter. Can someone explain to me
where a storm would have to track to allow for snow to develop in my
area ? I do know enough cold air has to be tapped and funneled into the moisture but at what location does this occur ? Thanks Eric in SC

I second that request. I am here in Columbia SC and that is a common scenario.

You need to be north of the low track to even have a chance of snow. To the south of it, you have southerly and westerly winds which brings up warm air.

In addition to the low to your south, you need a massive high pressure system centered over the Mid-Atlantic. Think below zero temperatures in D.C.

Well, not below-zero temps, but still pretty cold temperatures throughout PA and the rest of the Mid-Atlantic (teens?) and a low tracking out of the gulf and exiting the coast over GA coast.
